What is an External Organizer?

An external organizer focuses on helping workers who are not yet unionized come together to form a union. Their role is to educate workers about their rights, guide them through the organizing process, and help them build the structure needed to win recognition and negotiate their first contract.

External organizers spend much of their time having one-on-one conversations with workers, identifying workplace issues, and helping employees understand the power of collective action. They also assist workers in building organizing committees, planning campaigns, and navigating legal processes related to union elections.

The goal of an external organizer is not to speak for workers, but to empower workers to lead their own movement and build long-term power in their workplace.
