First 3 steps as an Union Leader

When stepping into a union leadership role, the first week should focus on building a foundation for organizing. Three key actions can make a big difference.

1 - Identify Worksite Leaders
Every workplace has people others naturally trust and listen to. Identifying these informal leaders across departments and shifts helps build a strong network that can communicate with coworkers and mobilize support when needed.

2 - Educate Workers on Their Rights
Many workers don’t fully know their contract protections or workplace rights. Taking time to explain these rights helps build confidence and encourages workers to speak up when issues arise.

3 - Map the Worksite
Worksite mapping helps leaders understand the structure of the workplace—departments, shifts, and where support exists. This allows organizing efforts to reach everyone and ensures no group of workers is left out.

Strong organizing begins with relationships, education, and structure. These first steps help build the foundation for an engaged and empowered workforce. ✊
