What is a Union Representative / Steward?
A union representative, often called a steward, is the frontline advocate for union members in the workplace. Stewards serve as the direct link between the union and workers, helping ensure that the collective bargaining agreement is respected and that members’ rights are protected.
Their responsibilities include addressing workplace concerns, assisting members with grievances, representing workers in disciplinary meetings, and helping resolve conflicts with management. Stewards also communicate important union updates, encourage member participation, and help maintain solidarity among coworkers.
Because they work directly on the shop floor, stewards are often the first people members turn to when issues arise. Their role is essential in making sure the contract is enforced and that workers feel supported and represented.
